Life Purpose Series Step 7 - Connection

 Being a part of a community makes you feel like you're a part of something bigger than yourself. It's important for us as human beings to feel accepted and to be able to offer our support to others. Being connected helps us feel a sense of purpose that we might not get from anything else.  

I talk quite often about the Blue Zone Study and community is one of the Power 9, nine commonalities that lead to longer, healthier, happier lives. As a matter of fact, 3 of the 9 have to do with friends, family, and community.

Be sure to spend time with, talk to, or write to your friends and family every day. Connection is one of the basic human needs and is very important to connect with the people in your life. This is one of the most important pieces of the health and wellness puzzle.

This step can be very important right now especially after coming through the past year and a half. 

Finding connection within some of the turmoil can seem difficult but if you really think about it, it’s not.

Focus on what an ideal social situation would be for you to connect with friends and family.

How often do you need connection, what type of people do you want to surround yourself with, and what can you offer to them?

Make a point to check in with the people who are important to you and see what they need. Asking yourself these questions and communicating with the people you love can help you create your perfect community, your tribe.

If you're not surrounded by the type of community you need, then get to work and start finding them. This doesn’t mean you have to fire all your current friends and family. It just means you want to add different types of people to your life. 

I truly believe that we don’t meet people by accident. Usually, there is a reason. Some people are there for the long haul and some people come into your life just to support you or teach you a lesson during that time. 

Action Steps:

  • Make a point to connect with the people in your household and life daily. Tell them they're important and why.
  • Make plans and put them on your calendar with friends, family members, and loved ones.
  • Share a meal with someone you care for.
  • Write, text, email, call and tell the people you love how much you care and appreciate them. Don't assume they know this. Everyone always benefits from hearing how much they are loved.
  • Get involved and spend time doing the things you love and meet new people this way.
  • Be authentically, 100%, yourself and you’ll be sure to attract the right tribe.

Tips: Don't put this off for another day, just do it. You have no idea how your life and the lives of others can improve when you do. It's magical!
