Signs Your Nervous System is Healing: Tools and Tips

Healing the Nervous System: What It Means, Tools to Use, and Signs of Progress

Hey friend! Let's talk about something super important for your overall well-being: healing your nervous system. This process can truly transform how you feel every day, from reducing stress to boosting your energy levels. So, what exactly does it mean to heal your nervous system, and how can you do it? Let’s dive in!

Before I get started, I wanted to share my journey from being completely disconnected with myself as a person and my body after years of being in a mentally and verbally abusive relationship and not practicing any self care and love.

I started by setting and maintaining boundaries, removing as much friction from my daily life as possible, allowing space for self love and care, reconnecting and supporting my intuition and then learning to heal and support my nervous system moving forward.

This is the work I do everyday with my clients. Be sure to read to the end to see the signs that you’re healing and how you can work with me more intimately to start to heal yourself!

Also, any practice I recommend below, I tried and use.

So let’s get into it!

What Does Healing the Nervous System Mean?

Your nervous system is like your body's control center, managing everything from how you react to stress to how you digest food. It includes the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (all the nerves throughout your body). A crucial part of this system is the autonomic nervous system, which has two main parts: the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for the "fight or flight" response) and the parasympathetic nervous system (which handles "rest and digest" activities).

When we talk about healing the nervous system, we're focusing on rebalancing these systems, especially if they've been thrown out of whack by chronic stress, trauma, or ongoing anxiety. Essentially, it’s about calming the overactive stress responses and nurturing a state of relaxation and recovery.

Tools for Healing the Nervous System

Mind Tools:
  • Meditation: This is a fantastic way to train your brain to relax. Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference. This includes Yoga Nidra.
  • Mindfulness: Being fully present in the moment helps break the cycle of worry and stress. Try focusing on your breath or the sensations around you.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This therapy helps you reframe negative thoughts and develop healthier coping mechanisms. It’s like giving your mind a tune-up.
  • Breathwork: Deep, mindful breathing techniques can activate your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a sense of calm.
Body Tools:
  • Yoga: This practice combines physical postures, breath control, and meditation. It’s fantastic for both your body and mind.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity reduces stress hormones and boosts endorphins, which are your body's natural feel-good chemicals.
  • Massage Therapy: Helps release tension, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. Who doesn't love a good massage?
  • Healthy Nutrition: Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports your nervous system’s overall function.
  • Somatic Tools: These are especially great for releasing stored stress in the body.
    • Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups helps reduce physical stress.
    • Body Scanning: This involves mentally scanning your body for areas of tension and consciously relaxing them.
    • Tai Chi or Qigong: These gentle, flowing movements combined with breath work can enhance your body’s energy flow and promote relaxation.
    • Dance Therapy: Expressing yourself through dance can be incredibly freeing and help release emotional and physical tension.
Soul Tools:
  • Gratitude Practice: Taking time each day to focus on what you’re grateful for can shift your mindset from stress to positivity.
  • Creative Expression: Whether it’s painting, writing, or playing music, engaging in creative activities can be incredibly therapeutic.
  • Nature Connection: Spending time in nature can ground you and calm your nervous system. Think walks in the park, gardening, or even just sitting outside.
  • Spiritual Practices: Activities like prayer, chanting, or participating in spiritual rituals can provide comfort and support your emotional well-being.

Signs Your Nervous System Is Healing

So, how do you know if all these efforts are paying off? Here are some signs your nervous system is on the mend:

  • Improved Sleep: You’re getting better sleep quality and duration, waking up refreshed.
  • Increased Resilience: You handle stress more effectively and bounce back from setbacks more quickly. Responding to difficulties instead of reacting to them.
  • Enhanced Mood: You notice reduced anxiety and depression, and you feel more stable and positive.
  • Physical Relaxation: There’s less muscle tension, and you have fewer stress-related physical symptoms like headaches or stomach issues.
  • Calm Mind: You experience fewer racing thoughts and greater mental clarity and focus.
  • Better Digestion: Your digestive health improves as your body’s "rest and digest" mode kicks in more effectively.

Healing your nervous system is a journey that involves patience and consistency. By integrating these mind, body, and soul tools into your daily routine, you can create a balanced and resilient nervous system. This can lead to a healthier, happier life where stress is managed, and you feel more at peace.
