Get Unstuck Series - Learning Your Dreams, Passions, & Purpose
In this next episode of the “Get Unstuck Series” I thought it would be good to talk about how to dream big, and find your passions, & purpose.
What does that even mean?
Speaking from experience, when I was feeling beyond stuck. I mean, I was so freaking stuck I couldn’t even begin to know what I wanted.
I had to start reconnecting with myself. Who was I now, who was I before, what do I want, Am I even allowed to dream big?
I mean I actually used to think, why bother? I was so beaten down that I didn’t even know where to start.
So what I did was I went back. I went back to a time before I was beaten down, when I remember being happy, inspired, and excited about everything in life.
I thought to myself, I need to feel this way again.
I have to, and everyone needs to feel this way.
Don’t try to sell me the line, oh Tina grow up, not everything is fun and games, you can’t have everything.
Says who?? Who made that rule, and who brings that rule into existence?
I’ll tell you, you do. Yup the only person who limits you, is you.
There is no dream police, telling you your dreams are too big.
There are no fun police there saying, wait a minute, you're having too much fun and not working hard enough.
The only one telling you this is you. Well, maybe society, but society's rules are nothing but bullshit rules.
There is no enforcement of these rules.
Unless you really care what so and so on Social Media thinks of you? God, I hope not.
If so that's a whole other episode, blog post, or live stream!
So where do you start when you are as lost as I was? When you lost that connection with your true self?
Well, I went back to when I was a kid, like 8-10. That's when I remember thinking that I could rule the world and have anything I wanted.
Just tuning into that feeling, meditating into that time period of my life, and journaling out how I remember thinking and the feeling was so healing, and definitely started to reconnect with that lighter, happier, version of my soul.
So, of course, I have an exercise for you! I always do.
Listen to the podcast version of this blog post >>HERE<<
Yes, it involves journaling.
Before you start though, I think it's really important to get into a relaxed state, almost a meditative state.
So whatever it is you do to get here do this first otherwise. Take a few moments with me right now to just take a few deep breaths.
What works for me is this,
Breathe in for a count of 4, hold at the top, and exhale for a count of 4. Do this 4 times.
Then visualize yourself at the point in your life when you remember feeling like I said earlier.
Inspired, excited, unstoppable.
Ask yourself, How did you feel when you woke up in the morning? What were your thoughts? How did you feel at the end of the day? How did you approach your day?
Now I understand that as adults we have responsibilities, we have to get things done, right?
But I’m telling you right now, that's no reason to start your day in stress & overwhelm.
Try starting with inspiration, be intentional about how you spend your time and make the CHOICE to have some fucking fun!
It’s a choice of how you approach your day.
For example: As you drive into your soul-sucking job, you have a choice to be miserable, or angry, or you can be happy, listen to your favorite music, or call your favorite person.
That's a super simple example, but it shows that you really do have a choice.
This is what I learned from my 8-year-old self. She's fierce, she doesn’t care what the bullshit rules are, and she's happy. She starts her day like the possibilities are limitless because they are.
How can I approach my life this way every morning, with wonder and excitement?
Just DECIDE to.
Now, let’s get to the exercise:
I want you to get a piece of paper, and write out everything you loved to do when you were a kid, then in your teens, your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, etc.
Then, Look at all your answers and circle or highlight all the things in common throughout the years.
Lastly, ask yourself, am I doing any of these things now? If not why? Write out all your excuses and then we will move on to how to handle those in a minute.
I love this exercise. It’s fun, it brings you back to good things and times. It reminds you of who you were before you got kidnapped by the hamster wheel of life.
Now, your excuses. These reasons you don’t do these things. I want you to write out in detail why these excuses are complete bullshit. Prove them wrong. Because believe me, there is no reason you shouldn't be doing the things you know you love in your heart and soul.
That last part is the hardest part but just get it done. You’ll thank yourself later. After you start doing the things you love again. You reignite your spark!
In the last part, I double dare you to start doing one of those things on your list that you haven’t been doing. Put it on your schedule, plan it out, get a friend to join you, and do whatever it takes to get started.
This is the beginning of reconnecting with your true self, your joy, your purpose, and what you love.
I pinky promise you, you will love the results!
I’m going to share with you one of my things. It’s not too exciting but it's really meaningful to me.
When I was a kid, I loved reading, I was very into it and did it a lot. I did this until my 20’s-30’s when my life got very “complicated”
I just very recently, in the last 5 years, started reading a lot again. I love it, I reconnected with it. But the big dream is to write a book! I always wanted to, when I was really young I was going to write a series and be a famous writer. (My fabulous kid perspective)
So I decided to write a book, yes, I’m doing it and nothing will stop me.
I just started writing and will be releasing it next year on my birthday (OCTOBER)!
So what about you?
To start, if you're feeling disconnected from yourself, your passion, and your purpose, then do the exercises.
Try to be intentional and start your day with this childlike wonder and fun.
Like I said, DECIDE, it’s a CHOICE.
I’ll see you next week when we dare to dream big!
