Beat Burnout: Simple Tips for a Happier, Less Stressed You
When I was in my 30’s I experienced such an intense level of burnout that I ended up having a stroke. Through my recovery I knew I had too learn how to heal my nervous system and create a life and space around me that felt good, supported, and more relaxed.
Are you feeling overwhelmed and burnt out? You’re not alone. Life can be hectic, but with a few simple changes, you can start feeling more balanced and joyful, before you get yourself in the state that I experienced.
As a life coach specializing in burnout prevention, I’m here to share some easy self-care practices, somatic exercises, and fun tactics to help you stay connected and purposeful every day.
First Things First, Recognize the Signs
First things first, let’s identify the signs of burnout. If you’re feeling constantly tired, irritable, or detached, it’s time to take action. Recognizing these symptoms is the first step toward healing. Be intentional about slowing down a bit and checking in with yourself. Ask yourself the question, How am I feeling right now? What do I need mentally and physically today to support my health? Make the space needed to add in activities that will help you not only become more resilient but also thrive in your life.
Here are some ways to get started:
Self-Care Practices
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritize your well-being. Boundaries are so important, the foundation of great self care. (I’ll be hosting a Boundary Badass Bootcamp this fell!) Keep on the lookout for it!
- Daily Self-Care: Schedule time for activities that make you happy, like reading, taking a bath, or meditating, time with loved ones. What does this look like for you?
- Eat Well: Fuel your body with nutritious foods and stay hydrated.
- Move Your Body: Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days. Find something that's fun for you and makes you happy.
Somatic Practices
- Deep Breathing: Try inhaling for four counts, holding for four, and exhaling for four.
- Muscle Relaxation: Tense and release each muscle group, starting from your toes to your head.
- Grounding Exercises: Walk barefoot on grass or hold a rock or leaf to connect with nature.
- Mindful Movement: Practice yoga, tai chi, or gentle stretching.

Rest and Joy Tactics
- Get Good Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night and create a calming bedtime routine.
- Take Breaks: Step away from work or daily tasks regularly.
- Have Fun: Make time for activities that bring you joy, like hobbies or playing a sport. Find ways to do this in short intervals every day.
